WESA Newsroom Internship

Position Overview:
90.5 WESA is Pittsburgh's NPR News Station. The internship program includes training sessions and mentoring by professional reporters, hosts, and editors. Internships are unpaid and no representation is made in regard to the availability of a paid position at the end of the internship. Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program. Academic Credit can be awarded based on mutual agreement between the intern's school and 90.5 WESA.

The Newsroom Internship program teaches students to produce broadcast and digital journalism in a professional public media environment, including training in audio production and editing. The goal is to prepare students for an entry-level job in public media or digital journalism. Duties and responsibilities for this unpaid position include the following.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Story research
  • Field reporting with audio and potentially video equipment
  • Multimedia projects including photography and video
  • Pitching, writing, and producing stories for broadcasat
  • Pitching, writing and producing stories for web
Qualifications and Skills Required:
  • You must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program.
  • Work toward a degree in Journalism, English or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • You must be available to work 15-30 hours per week.

Work Environment
This position will work in a typical office environment using computers, printers and other office equipment. This position may need to attend events in the evening or on weekends.

Internships are unpaid and no representation is made to the availability of a paid job at the conclusion of the internship. Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program. Academic credit can be awarded based on the mutual agreement of the intern’s school and Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting.

The Company

* 90.5 WESA was launched in 2011 (in partnership with Pittsburgh’s philanthropic community) with an NPR news format. Its stated mission is “to work for the public to inform people in ways that engage and inspire them to create dialogue about community issues and stories.”

* 91.3 WYEP was founded in 1974 as an all-volunteer community licensed radio station. It broadcasts a diverse offering of adult alternative music, provides community education programs, and presents a large number of highly visible events and concerts in the region. Its mission is to “enrich the community through musical discovery, expression and education.”

In addition to radio programming, both stations play an active role in engaging the community through online and mobile services and in-person events, and have a prominent voice in Pittsburgh’s civic and cultural affairs. Each week more than 200,000 Southwestern Pennsylvanians listen to PCBC broadcasts and tens of thousands more engage with our content through our websites and mobile digital services.
